Time Management Advice from Steve Jobs

Last Friday, 20/20 did a profile of 7 Secrets to Steve Jobs’ Success.  One of those secrets is relative to getting organized and I’d like to share it with you and discuss this concept.

“Say No to 1,000 Things” – We all could commit ourselves to far too many things that we are interested in.  When we over commit, quality suffers, period.  Steve Jobs was known for simplifying things.  When he returned to Apple in 1997, he took their 300 products and reduced it to 10.  This saved Apple from bankruptcy.  In her personal life, Steve decided to wear the same outfit daily so he nor anyone else would have to spend time thinking about his wardrobe.  To him this was not an area where he felt time on decisions should be made, so he solved it by wearing a single outfit.  I’m not saying get rid of all your clothes, but I am saying that by saying “no” to a thousand things and “yes” to your core most important focuses, you will be better able to do these things well and reach your maximum potential within these focuses.

I ask you to do the following exercise: Steve Jobs 7 Secrets to Success

  1. 1. What are your focuses right now?
  2. 2. What are your core focuses?
  3. 3. Are your focuses balanced?  Meaning, do you have enough time/energy to do them all well?
  4. 4. If not, what activities/commitments can you let go of or reduce in order to focus more on your core focuses?

My hope is that this short exercise will help you with your focus and help you begin to say no to a 1,000 things and yes to very few.  Let me know if it helps and what your decisions are as well.  And please watch the 20/20 segment on Steve Jobs 7 Secrets to Success.  It’s a very interesting insight into a man who changed the way our world operates.  🙂
